The Camera Trap

The Camera Trap

When is art surveillance?

The Hearth Gallery • Bowen Island, BC • May 28-June 12, 2022

Street photography is a transgressive act that records people in their daily environment and historic period. But is it wrong to take photos of people without their knowledge or consent? This show is a product of that tension. Here are some of the images being presented in the gallery. Read my description of the event on this site.

several people run together in a line, blurred so that they appear as a colourful wave more than individuals.
Two girls have sandals and one is barefoot. Near the boy are two extra shoes on the ground.
Blurred image of woman in peasant dress in a community dance, with ropes held between her and the next people in front and behind her.
three abstracted figures in bright colours against a bright background are people in an airport
in a broad courtyard beneath a tall white building two tiny boys face away from the camera looking at something in their hands.
A mother pushes a stroller in the dark, sillhouetted by thousands of bright lights
A giant carved head partly submerged in a pond seems to watch a woman walking by
Tourists anxiously watching acrobats in Barcelona old city 2016
a bright, blurred image of a woman riding a bike with a crisp profile against stripes of colour.
